The artist Franz Lerch is one of the most important representatives of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Realism) in Austria. Although he and his wife had to leave Austria in the late 1930s because of her Jewish background. Before the departure he destroyed a large part of his works and after the emigration Lerch painted only in his leisure time. Thus there are only a few paintings preserved. His nudes, portraits and landscapes are characterized by a formal strength and rich colours.
